About Our Leather
CRAZY HORSE LEATHER

Used for the Green, Burgundy, and Gold-Brown journals. Also known as saddle leather, is made by applying a special kind of wax to a full grain leather surface.  Full grain is the whole hide with all its layers intact. The surface has natural variations and imperfections such as scars, brands, and rub marks.   When dyed, the color penetrates completely through, not subject to fading or transferring.  The natural wax enhances the leather fibers so that when scratched or rubbed, the color will vary, producing the rustic, vintage appearance that ages beautifully over time.  It is durable and water resistant. Poetic Sunrise journals are made with 5-6 oz full grain leather, approximately 2.5cm thick.  The covers are flexible, yet with enough stiffness to provide a stable surface for writing or drawing.  Handling the leather often, bending, squeezing, or rubbing develops a custom patina and rich color variation that produces a unique character that grows richer with use.

CARE:

Should unwanted scratches appear, they can be “erased” by pressing and rubbing in a circular motion with your finger or a soft, dry cloth.  If the leather gets wet, blot dry with a soft cloth.  Do not use heat to hasten drying as it could cause the leather to shrink unevenly.  If desired, a leather dressing can be applied, however it will inhibit the natural wear that gives this leather its unique appearance.   Do not use chemicals or spray finishes or protectants.  Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or direct sunlight.

TOP GRAIN LEATHER

Used for the Matte Black, Rich Brown, and Mountain Mahogany journals.  Top grain leather is similar in weight and durability to full grain, however the top layer with its variable imperfections is removed leaving a smooth, fine textured surface.  It is finished with a light application of leather dressing to enhance its water resistance and rich matte appearance.

CARE:

Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat or direct sunlight.  When the leather gets wet, blot dry with a soft cloth.  Do not use heat to hasten drying as it could cause the leather to shrink unevenly.  Do not use chemicals or spray finishes or protectants.   If desired, an occasional light application of a leather dressing, buffing off the excess will help to maintain a like-new appearance and continue to enhance its water resistance for many years.
